• Outdoor unit clearance — keep at least two feet of space clear around the condenser.
• Any new noise, smell, or moisture — small changes are worth noting even if nothing seems urgent yet.
• Your energy bill trend — a gradual, unexplained increase is often the earliest sign something's working harder than it should.

How often, realistically
