5 Signs Your AC Compressor Is Failing

The compressor is essentially the heart of your AC system, and it's the single most expensive component to replace. Catching a failing compressor early — or, better, catching whatever's stressing it before it actually fails — can be the difference between a moderate repair and a much bigger decision.

1. Warm air even though the system is running

If the system powers on, the fan runs, but the air coming out isn't actually cold, a failing compressor is one possible cause — though it's worth noting a bad capacitor or low refrigerant can cause similar symptoms, so this alone doesn't confirm it.

2. Loud noises from the outdoor unit

A humming, clicking, or grinding noise from the outdoor unit — especially if the system won't actually start despite the noise — is a classic warning sign. Grinding in particular often points to worn internal components.

3. The outdoor unit vibrates hard when starting

Some vibration on startup is normal, but a hard shake or knock when the system kicks on can indicate the compressor is struggling to start, which puts extra strain on it every single cycle.

4. Breaker trips repeatedly

A compressor drawing too much current as it starts can trip the breaker. If resetting it once and it trips again quickly, that's a sign to stop resetting it and get it looked at — repeatedly restarting a struggling compressor accelerates the damage.

5. The system runs constantly without actually cooling

A compressor that's losing efficiency but hasn't fully failed yet often shows up as a system that runs and runs without ever quite reaching the set temperature — higher energy bills with worse comfort as the result.

What to do if you notice these signs

Because compressor replacement is such a significant repair, it's worth confirming the compressor is actually the problem before assuming the worst — a capacitor or electrical issue mimicking these symptoms is a much cheaper fix. A proper diagnostic checks amp draw, capacitor condition, and refrigerant pressure before pointing at the compressor specifically.
