Why Is My AC Freezing Up?
It sounds backwards, but ice on your air conditioner is a bad sign, not a good one. A frozen indoor coil or icy refrigerant lines usually mean your system is struggling, not overachieving — and running it while it's frozen can turn a simple fix into a much more expensive one.
The two most common causes
Almost every freezing AC comes down to one of two root causes: restricted airflow across the indoor coil, or low refrigerant charge. Both cause the coil to get colder than it should, and once ice starts forming, it makes the underlying problem worse — ice itself blocks airflow, which drops the coil temperature further, which makes more ice.
- Restricted airflow: a dirty filter, a failing blower motor, or blocked return vents all reduce the air moving across the coil.
- Low refrigerant: usually caused by a leak somewhere in the system — refrigerant doesn't get "used up," so if the level is low, it's going somewhere.
How to tell which one it is
You often can't tell for certain without a technician checking refrigerant pressure and airflow directly, but a couple of clues can point you in the right direction. If you haven't changed your filter in a while and it's visibly clogged, airflow restriction is the more likely culprit. If your filter is clean and the system has been cooling less effectively for weeks before the ice showed up, low refrigerant is more likely — which almost always means there's a leak that needs to be found before simply adding more.
What to do right now
- Turn the system off (cooling mode) but leave the fan running, if your thermostat allows it — this helps the ice melt without straining the compressor further.
- Check and replace the filter if it's dirty — this alone resolves a real percentage of freezing complaints.
- Don't keep running the system hoping it'll clear on its own; a compressor working against a frozen, restricted coil is at real risk of damage.
- Once the ice is melted, get the actual cause diagnosed rather than just turning the system back on and hoping.
